Part of advocating for equity and excellence is creating engaging opportunities for dialog around best practices in curriculum and instruction through the knowledge and experience of experts.

Equity Initiatives Include Teaching Literacy

Equity initiatives in Oak Park and River Forest include moving to a Balanced Literacy approach for teaching reading. Did you know there was a war over this? Not really, but there are a couple schools of thought on this and some point to poor curriculum choices as an explanation for poor reading proficiency in the United States. Did you know roughly 60% of US 4th graders are below US proficiency?

Congress convened a National Reading Panel to get to the bottom of what research says is best. Dr. Shanahan is a nationally renowned literacy researcher and was one of the leaders on this nationwide effort.

We asked him three questions as a basis for his lecture and Q/A.

1. What are the reading wars, why and is it over?

2. What does the research say about best practices for teaching reading?

3. What should parents know to help build the strongest foundation in young readers?
